Valdosta Choral Guild is a community choral group that was organized as a non-profit organization in the 1970's. We have gone through many changes and several different directors in that time, but one thing that hasn't changed is our commitment that all persons who love to sing should be allowed to sing in a public venue; that's why auditions have never been a requirement for membership.
We have been exceedingly lucky to have Dr. Lynn A. Corbin as our director since 1998. It is sometimes said, "He who can't, teaches". That is certainly not true in her case. Not only is she a Professor of Music but her professional singing career includes singing with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in France and Carnegie Hall.
For almost every concert, Lynn has us sing one classical piece from a variety of different composers. However, not only are the classical composers varied, the types of music we sing is varied. For our upcoming concert, we will be singing Mozart's Requiem and some Americana like Camptown Races and She'll be Comin Round the Mountain. These pieces have intricate harmonies; a song doesn't have to be written in the Victorian era to be good.
In the past, we have also sung Broadway, patriotic songs, love songs and American Spirituals done a capella. Lynn always keeps things interesting so that even the long term members and patrons never get bored.
